Summary:
The house is to vote on a bill, which is supposed to cut money for the food stamp program.  The cuts would amount to $4 billion dollars to the $80 billion dollar program.  1 in 7 Americans, more than 47 million people, receive food stamps. The cuts are to be aimed towards fully-able adults without dependents on this program. This bill was vetoed by the president.  Democrats a opposed to cuts period, the republicans are split, but the conservatives support the cuts. The house seems to be split and it is assumed that if the bill is passed it will never become a law.

Opinion:
The rule with food stamps is if you don't use it, you lose it, which then in encourages people to spend and buy more then they need.  I personally know a woman who receives food stamps, she would buy milk and other groceries not only for herself but for her neighbors with her food stamps because she didn't want the lose the assistance she receives.  Other stories I have been told are about people buying lobster tail, shrimp, filet mignon and other high end foods with food stamps.  The article states that the fully-able adults without dependents would be targeted for the cuts, what is any fully-able man or woman without children doing on food stamps? Now this isn't to say that food stamps aren't a good thing because they are and help a lot of people, the thing is the system is abused and needs to be cut back so necessities are bought not luxuries.

  1. I agree with you. There are a lot people who actually need food stamps, but there are also a lot of people don’t deserve it. They are deceiving the service and using it in the wrong way. I support the cuts; only people who need it should have and use food stamps. The government can save money and use it for other services.

  2. I absolutely agree. Food stamps are for people who need assistance with buying groceries. Therefore, people should not be buying high end food like lobster tail and filet mignon with food stamps and if they are, I assume they don't need the help they're receiving from the government. I support the cuts because the government can save money.

  3. I don't understand how people are just given food stamps once because they are in need and then never reevaluated to see if the actually need them. You should be required to re-qualify for food stamps once a year so that the abuse stops. The whole use them or lose them is nice in theory but it creates the problem mentioned above and I am in total support of the cuts. People don't need all of that assistance and if food stamps allow people to buy such high end delicacies than I think the amount of money needs to be lowered.

  4. If I am not mistaken, the food stamp, or SNAP, program works by giving recipients a balance each month, which they are allowed to spend on any non-taxable food item. If they use up this balance, they have to wait until next month to receive any benefits. If these people you are talking about are spending money on lobster tail, why should we stop them from doing so? If they so choose to spend their allotted money on expensive food instead of making frugal decisions, just let them. Making cuts to the system will only hurt those who use the money responsibly, by either reducing the amount of money they receive, or reducing the amount of people who are covered by this program. Then again, maybe I am completely wrong as to how the SNAP program works...

  5. I think this is a major program that needs to be cut in order to get rid of a chunk of our debt. I'm not saying completely get rid of it, but i am saying i think it should be for a very few limited amount of people that NEED the assistance of this program. I'm not sure how much money they get to spend on food, but if they're buying luxurious foods, and still have money left to buy general food products, i would call that abusing or playing the system and too many people get away with it.

  6. I believe that some of the people who receive food stamps need to go out there and make a living for crying out loud. I realize that some people are in a bad situation and need them to survive, but I saw a Fox News report (don't watch Fox News) about a guy in California who is unemployed, doesn't look for jobs, just goes surfing all day literally, and then goes to the store with his stamps and eats like a king for dinner. He bought friggin lobster, scallops, energy drinks. This is why I cant stand some people. It's bs.

  7. I certainly agree with you about food stamps encouraging people to take more than they need. After all, who's going to let their food stamps lay around the house and go to waste when they can have extra food or help their neighbors out? Cody is right, people who are buying luxurious foods with their food stamps are absolutely abusing the system, and the only way the government can stop this is by making a list of included foods that can be purchased with food stamps, instead of covering everything.

  8. I also agree that food stamps could encourage people to use or take more than they need, I do think it would be unfair to take away how much money or who can get food stamps is decreased but I do agree with David that the government could make a list of acceptable food and I don't actually know how much that would hurt those people that use their stamps responsibly because if they do then they don't need to worry about the food list
